Kettle the Cops

Peaceful Protest in support of Alfie Meadows and against police brutality at New Scotland Yard, London.

Philip Brennan | PhilipBrennan.net | 14 December 2010:

At 13:00 hours today the friends and family of Alfie Meadows held a protest outside of New Scotland Yard police headquarters to illustrate the amount of police brutality present at the December 9th demonstration against the Student Tuition Fees rise. As I reported at the time, the vote barely scraped through with a majority of 21. Never-the-less it passed the House of Commons, much to everyone's dismay.

Alfie Meadows was hit over the head by a police officer during the protests and sustained serious head injuries, even though he was not rioting or causing criminal damage at all during the rather heated protests of that night. The injuries he sustain were life-threatening, and after being rushed to hospital he had to have emergency surgery to remove a blood-clot from his brain. The young man is very lucky to be alive after such a severe blow to the head.

Mrs Meadows did several interviews with the Main Stream Media during the protest, which must have been stressful for her as by the time I got around to seeing her she did not want to speak to any more media. I cannot say that I blame her because no matter how clear you are in what you say to them, the Main Stream Media will always try to spin it for their agenda.

Despite the small numbers who turned up to the protests, and the lack of co-operation of the police, the demonstration still went off very peacefully, and I feel that the students got their point across despite the media circus.

The protest was partially arranged through the Kettle the Cops facebook event listing, sponsored by MDX Against Cuts (Friends of Alfie Meadows) and "Our Unreliable".
