Combating the Delphi Technique and Occupy Infiltration

When Occupy Wall Street first began, it was a force to be reckoned with. Facing the daunting task of challenging the system and coordinating action, the movement also had to contend with the pathetic corporate-controlled media which did its very best to turn a blind eye to what was happening on Wall Street.

Nevertheless, days turned to weeks before the mainstream media even mentioned the intense level of protests occurring all across the country and, even then, the coverage was sparse. However, they were eventually forced to acknowledge the level of discontent with the direction of the country that was being felt by a wide variety of Americans; most significantly, those who considered themselves liberals (real or otherwise). Finally, these individuals were no longer content to sit back and worship Obama while their own standards of living were being drastically reduced and the fabric of the country tragically coming undone.

As is to be expected, the police responded in their typical manner of brutality and thuggery. Yet the protestors refused to yield. As a result, Wall Street itself began to gradually pay more attention to the “little people” in the street. Soon, even smaller cities all across the country and in almost every state had their own group of anti-Wall Street, anti-authoritarian, Occupy protestors gathering around government buildings or banking institutions.

Yet, in what seems to be a repeat of what happened to the Tea Party movement, it was only a matter of weeks before Occupy Wall Street was being morphed into what amounted to a political action committee representing the Democratic Party, an obvious servant of the Wall Street finance oligarchs that Occupy had once so fervently opposed.

Obviously, not all Occupy groups have been completely co-opted by agents of Wall Street, political parties, or Foundation-funded operatives. To these groups, we must say congratulations and offer legitimate support where we can. Likewise for the Tea Party.

However, for the vast majority of both movements this is not the case. It is for this reason that we must identify some of the methods used when one is co-opting a legitimate movement, as well as some of the principal actors involved in the attempt to co-opt Occupy. This article will briefly focus on at least one of the methods of infiltrating and destroying legitimate Occupy Wall Street groups all across the country, particularly those in larger cities, but still reaching out to all the others.

At this point, it appears that Occupy is not being crippled so much by opposition from without, but by paralysis from within. It is well-known that the Occupy Wall Street movement has never been able to articulate or even agree on any set of tangible, political demands. After all, this is one of the issues that psychotic blowhards such as Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity were able to seize upon when attempting to categorize the participants as “dirty hippies” and spoiled children. A movement with no demands will increasingly lend itself to the appearance of being a temper tantrum more than true political resistance.

Yet the Occupy movement is not paralyzed due to a lack of willing participants or a lack of will to fight against oligarchy. It is paralyzed because it has been infiltrated by agents of the oligarchs in an effort to cripple the movement from ever getting back off the ground. This, in effect, is the purpose of the General Assemblies.

Obviously, any activist interested in promoting participation, accountability, and democracy would easily be tempted to accept a system that, at first glance, promotes all of these traits. The average protester might assume that, since everyone can participate in some way, the sessions are open, and everyone apparently gets their say, that this method of decision making suits their own purposes perfectly.The truth, however, is just the opposite. It is the General Assembly which is perhaps the most crippling aspect of Occupy today. It is the General Assembly which keeps Occupy protesters from articulating the tangible political demands which every movement needs.

It is the General Assembly which mires the movement in endless discussions regarding what committees to form and who should serve on them. It is the General Assembly which keeps Occupy protesters bogged down in long drawn-out discussions of what to have for dinner instead of actually protesting.

Not only is the General Assembly crippling Occupy with inaction, it is in reality creating an oligarchical system of domination within the movement, which itself becomes merely a microcosm of the system they are attempting to oppose.

The General Assembly itself is based upon the theory of group consensus, which is itself a model of decision making adhered to within many international organizations like the United Nations and Codex Alimentarius, which I have researched at length. Consensus-based decision making as a political system is rooted in Communitarianism and psychological warfare. It is oligarchical in nature. Even when approached with the best of intentions, Consensus-based decision making tends toward the direction of oligarchy, particularly when large numbers of people are involved. In terms of real application, with any situation where time might be a factor, Consensus building equals paralysis.

As Webster Tarpley wrote in his article, “Occupy Wall Street: Who Wants To Hijack The Movement?”

The consensus method provides immense comfort to the predatory speculators of Wall Street, since it virtually guarantees that no potent and controversial strategy to break the power of finance capital can emerge. Indeed, it guarantees that absolutely nothing will be able to emerge in an emergency after a rapid turn in the overall situation. The US Congress is paralyzed by a minority, but the consensus rules of the general assembly mean that it can be paralyzed by a tiny clique bent on sabotage. In the background, the covert steering committee is busy creating a series of faits accomplis.

The deliberations of the general assembly are one big filibuster. On October 4, much of the session was taken up with an agonized discussion of whether to buy or knit and sew sleeping bags as the nights became colder. Right-wing commentators hostile to the protests had a field day using this grotesque scene to mock the entire movement.

Furthermore, the Consensus method is extremely susceptible to what is called the Delphi Technique. For an excellent summary of the Delphi Technique, please see Albert V. Burns’ article, “The Delphi Technique: Let’s Stop Being Manipulated.”

Essentially, the Delphi Technique, which was originally developed by RAND in the 1950s as a psychological weapon and infiltration mechanism, is also a proven method by which movements can be co-opted and redirected for ulterior purposes.

The Delphi Technique works by infiltrating the protest group with individuals who might appear more experienced or educated in the issues which the organization is trying to address. In relation to the Occupy Movement, one might be seen as having more credibility and respect if one can rely on his “previous experience” in resistance movements in foreign countries and/or domestic protests. As a result of such expertise, these individuals often rise to the top of the group hierarchy.

Interestingly enough, we have been receiving many reports of exactly this happening from the front lines of Occupy. Many of these “protest experts” are funded by Foundations and NGO’s, two types of institutions that any legitimate protest movement should stay far away from lest it become what it is protesting in the first place. Such a model can only lead to centralization, as was seen in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for example, when two protest organizers came to town with experience from Egypt's Tahrir Square ... and plans for a single media source to be established in order to "shape the message." (Source and video)The individuals who are successful at infiltrating the groups will then become the “facilitators” of the General Assembly meetings. It is the facilitator who is almost always in control of guiding the direction of the meetings as well as both the agenda and, as it logically follows, the outcome.

This is made a much easier task for him if he is accompanied by others who can become facilitators of each separate committee formed by the General Assembly which act as specialized “working groups” for their various delegated responsibilities.

In this structure, consensus is formed not by the free exchange of ideas, debate, and decision, but by constant haranguing and misrepresentation of any views expressed by committee members who might disagree with the preordained outcome dictated and managed in secret by the facilitator.

Much like the general society, individuals who express dissenting views are marginalized, harassed, and demeaned until the entire group is coerced to accept the agenda as it was originally presented by the facilitator.

The fact that the Delphi Technique has been successful up to this point, however, should not necessarily be discouraging. This is because most protesters are simply unaware of what is happening. The trend of infiltration and paralysis which is now dragging Occupy down can be reversed.

As Burns writes in his article, there are four steps one must take in order to combat the domination of one’s group by infiltrators. Because the majority of the group is not likely to wake up to what is happening all at the same time, this will likely be the responsibility of one solitary individual in the beginning. Again, I encourage you to read Burns’ article for a great rundown of the Delphi Technique and how to combat it.

According to both of these documents, it is important to stay calm and focused and never allow yourself to become angry. Most of all, it is important to be persistent. Maintain charm, but always force the facilitator to answer the question, which should be aimed at exposing him/her, directly. The facilitator should not be allowed to dodge your question under any circumstances. It is also important to have as many of your own supporters as you can find to go with you as well. Splitting up into different committees and confronting the facilitators will go a long way to bringing the Delphi Technique to light and the infiltration to an end.

In the end, however, the General Assembly which has been rife with Delphi Technique infiltration, must be scrapped. It is the General Assembly approach which is robbing Occupy of the leaders it needs to guide the movement into effective political action and in setting forth tangible political demands.

Something based on the traditional Robert’s Rules of Order would no doubt be preferable to the Soviet-style paralysis and misdirection provided by the General Assembly. These rules are not perfect, but they are an enormous step above the General Assembly and consensus-based decision-making. They have, indeed, provided a structure for activist organizations for many years.

Ultimately, if it is oligarchy that Occupy seeks to resist, then it must first demonstrate that it can do so within its own movement. It is imperative that oligarchical change agents be extracted from Occupy, and that legitimate leaders emerge organically. Once the NGO’s and Foundation operatives are removed from the ranks of the protesters, then OWS can once again capture the attention of the oligarchs, Wall Street, and the nation.

Occupy London protests find Land Registry St.Paul's Cathedral loophole

The protesters at London's "Occupy" movement claim to have found a loophole in the ownership of land surrounding St.Paul's Cathedral, and so they claim to have registered the land at The Land Registry to a homeless man who sleeps on the steps there.

I performed live in our nation's capital just last week, on the four-month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. Immediately following this performance the thousands who were there stormed the steps of the Supreme Court and the White House.

OCCUPY THE WORLD, IT'S OURS.

The occupy movement seems to be gaining momentum and is moving in the right direction. In America there has been a campaign to occupy the ports, and though they have been evicted from the Wall Street site they are planning to re-occupy it with Occupy 2. In London there has been the occupation of the UBS building and the forming of the “Bank of Ideas”.

The occupy movement has to grow or it dies and the only way for it to grow is to branch out and bring the idea to a greater number of people. The occupying of the ports in America is widening the range of influence and allowing a greater number of people to become involved. The London “Bank of Ideas” again will involve a greater range of people and will widen the idea of occupation as a tool of change, rather than sitting in one spot in some symbolic action.

The work places, distribution and the streets should belong to the people, only then will we have justice.

This week Occupy Wall Street has taken an interesting turn that pushes the movement in a whole new direction. Most of the original camps may have been disbanded, but it is becoming apparent that this was a blessing in disguise. If anything, the establishment should consider those original encampments a warning shot, because they were only the first phase in this new American Revolution.

After being treated like animals by militarized police for exercising their right to free speech, many of the protesters are learning that begging and pleading with this kind of corrupt organization is not going to get them anywhere. But I guess there’s nothing wrong with asking nicely first, right? That surely would be the respectable thing to do, so we can definitely understand everyone wanting to play nice at first.

However, playing nice and “working within the system” all comes to an end when the politicians are just laughing while they send in their goons to violently attack you.The only way that “we the people” will truly win this revolution is if we take matters into our own hands in a series of small battles where we call the enemies bluff every time they attempt to assert their illegitimate authority.

With that being said, it is so fitting that #Occupyourhomes has become the next step for this movement because people are simply taking back the homes that were fraudulently ripped from under their feet, instead of getting distracted with political demands that won’t do the downtrodden any good when all is said and done anyway. Getting everyone back into their vacant homes on the other hand, that is beneficial for everyone and hurts no one else in the process.

Still, the banks are becoming concerned that victims of foreclosure and community activists in dozens of cities across the country are beginning to team up to “re-occupy” foreclosed homes. Yet, it doesn't really hurt the banks though as they got the homes for nothing in the first place because they made loans out of thin air, collected all sorts of fees and payments, sold the note a thousand times, and then ultimately got the asset. What a racket!

Earlier this week, ZeroHedge reported on an exposed internal email from Bank of America which showed that the banks are extremely threatened by this recent move from Occupy Wall Street. The emails said that these protests could potentially “impact the industry.” So if it hurts them and helps expose their scam, then I would consider that a big tip that OWS is starting to move in the right direction.

This kind of direct action is the only approach that will bring us progress, the political system isn’t going to work because one of its main objectives is keep us in our place. The courts, the government, the politicians and the media have all been put here as a means to uphold the status quo and prevent any kind of change from actually taking place, so naturally we aren’t going to have any luck creating social change using these platforms.

Luckily, it seems that Occupy Wall Street is evolving to adopt far more effective tactics in taking direct action, as opposed to making political demands and hoping for the best.

Americans stood up and said, "We have a right to shelter. No one can take that right from us." Today we re-occupied our homes.

In East New York, Brooklyn - a foreclosed home is being reclaimed today by a local homeless family. #OWS, along with local neighbors and community groups, has pledged to stay with the family and defend them from eviction. Kendall Jacklman from Picture The Homeless spoke to the housing crisis ongoing in New York City, saying, "There is enough housing in this city to shut down the Department of Homeless Services and offer everyone decent, affordable housing based on our real wages."

We own our homes - a callous bank that split ownership of our homes into hundreds of parts, redistributing them across the world under false ratings does not own our homes. Banks are able to restructure settlements constantly - we are not - they receive billions of dollars enabling them to stay afloat for long enough to steal our homes. Do not let them.

Across the nation occupiers along with community groups shut down foreclosure auctions and reclaimed homes for families displaced by the global economic crisis. Two homes in Atlanta were re-occupied. In Oakland, foreclosure auctions were disrupted at the county courthouse - more than a dozen homes were saved.

We stand in solidarity with homeowners across the country and the world whose homes are in the process of being stolen by faceless conglomerations motivated only by profit. We are the 99%. We will not let our homes be stolen.

Occupy London’s ‘public repossession’ of UBS bank in The City

LONDON – Nearby the Occupy London camp site at St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London, protesters have embarked on a new approach to raising the public’s level of awareness by occupying a third site – a vacant office block belonging to Swiss banking giants UBS.

In what has been billed as a “public repossession”, protesters took the demonstration up to another level today, occupying a major banking institution’s property which is located outside the edge of the Square Mile, inside London’s borough of Hackney.

Occupiers have made plans to set up a “Bank of Ideas” inside the four-story modern office complex located between Finsbury Square and Liverpool Street. The building boasts state-of -the-art meeting rooms and presentation facilities where Occupy plans to host speakers, workshops, seminars, events and a running exhibition over the coming weeks to highlight issues surrounding the global financial system and its effect on society.

Occupiers are citing UK ‘squatters rights’ under 1977 Criminal Law Section 6 as their legal right to take over the disused banking space.

“The criminal financial system that has allowed banks and other corporations to steal the wealth of the world is collapsing and the ‘Bank of Ideas’ is here to educate, inform, and to create a platform for solutions to be discussed and actioned because we are no longer willing to wait for bought-off politicians to change their ways”, says occupier Kish.

He adds, ” This is now a community space for the public to exchange skills and ideas and our only currency is creativity.”

The Guardian also reported today:

At a press conference inside the building Occupy activists said they hoped to avoid confrontation with police by negotiating with UBS to use the empty complex by agreement. Attempts to contact the bank had thus far been unanswered, they said.

Aside from the building’s size and location, near many other financial institutions, the activists say it was chosen as it is owned by a major bank, and one which was bailed out by taxpayers, albeit those in Switzerland. Ronan McNern, a regular camp spokesman, said: “UBS is representative of the sort of bank which is not acting in the public interest. This is a public repossession of their empty building.”

Occupy London’s main location at St Paul’s was given until 6pm yesterday evening to vacate their protest camp or face legal action from the Corporation of London. Occupy organisers say the site is safe for now, but are now preparing for a protracted legal battle with The City which is expected to last at least one month, but could potentially drag over into 2012.

At every corner of the park is the exchange and the fomentation of ideas.

Sharon Borthwick visited the occupations at London’s St Paul’s and Finsbury Square

Outside St Paul’s the Royal British Legion had set up a poppy selling stall, “Shoulder to shoulder with all who Serve”. From this side of the cathedral one couldn’t yet see the occupation site, and the reminder that ex-servicemen are obviously not given decent enough pensions to live by seemed especially pertinent, in a time when concessions made to the working class in the aftermath of World War II are all under attack.

The ruling class were wise then to introduce the welfare state, they knew that social unrest was brewing. The years prior to the war too were full of suffering; it truly was a Great Depression. During the Blitz public space also came to the forefront. It took an organised committee of citizens to eventually gain permission to access the London Underground stations for protection. With 40% of Britain’s housing stock flattened, the authorities eventually had to overlook squatting. Paternoster Square was the intended site of this occupation: formerly a public square it is now owned by the Subishi Estate Company which prior to the protest, oh so gracefully permitted 24 hour access. It is fine to come to London to work and shop. The profiteers are at least spooked, The Canary Wharf Group plc has just obtained a high court injunction preventing “any persons unknown remaining on the Canary Wharf estate in connection to protest action.”

So, going round the vast edifice and coming upon the first tents, it is warming to see some party atmosphere, a group of occupiers are playing football by the first aid tent. Its then I spot a congregation of religious types. Indeed, it would be hard not to spot them, of the two guitar players, one is resplendent in Buddhist orange and the one on bongos sports purple Doctor Martens and beautifully big hair, afro style. One woman is waving an Israeli flag, while another is waving a giant crucifix. So, I’m about to give them a wide berth when a bit of a drama ensues. A City ‘gent’, so fresh from his long fat lunch that he reeks of whisky, decides to stop and give everyone a mouthful of abuse, saying they should all get out of here and get jobs. Giant crucifix woman gives him a shouting match and others stop to join in, many laughing at the preposterous drama. Two Labour politicians roll up, David Winnick and Nicholas Dakin, saying they’ve come down to offer support, reactionary man shouting, “Oh you would”, and a TV crew has set up to film who may or may not have been connected to the Labour politicians in some kind of cynical canvassing enterprise, but I didn’t see their names among those who’d signed John McDonnell’s motion of 17th October, expressing support and solidarity with Occupy LSX, agreeing the present economic system is unsustainable, rejecting cuts in public services, supporting the strike on 30th November and student action on 9th November.

Sliding away from this spectacle, where entrenched reactionary man would dismiss anything constructive and said, “smarten yourself up, get a suit, you look like a nice young man, I’ll give you a job”, I went to the seat of the main action, the bottom of St Paul’s steps which serves as a speakers’ corner. The only message I heard by ‘human microphone’ was a health and safety plea from St Paul’s to remove bicycles chained to the railings surrounding Queen Victoria’s statue, though its hard to construe how chained up bikes are menacing. I don’t think the Church likes its pomp and circumstance messed with, Bishop Chartres saying, “there is a lot of pageantry planned for next year. The Queen is not going to come to the Lord Mayor’s show if she has to push through protesters camped on the doorstep.” Though the proposed injunctions made against protesters have at least been postponed. Throughout hese high-ranking clergy have proved their rank hypocrisy beyond all doubt. Back to St Paul’s steps and a man is holding up a sign, “I don’t care about the protest, I’m just here for the violence”, some kind of irony? I’m not sure, but an anti-capitalist speaker follows who speaks well and clearly on the avaricious, exploitative system he is there to change. The saner among the protesters have also managed to produce the Occupied Times, which is well worth a read.

The message

Intending to visit the south London cross-borough anti-cuts alliance (Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham) at the Finsbury Square occupation site, I found it had been squatted by a theatre company and was full of fantastical papier mache masks. The tent is still available to the borough’s alliance, but they haven’t had enough bodies available to keep someone permanently on site. There is an air of hippydom floating about the place, but also of serious debate, so the programme of lessons planned is a good balance of creative arts and serious discussion: an Arab Spring lecture, pumpkin carving, The Spanish Civil war Poetry of Cesar Vallejo, economic history and mask decorating, for instance.

Visually, both sites are impressive, for one, just to see so many tents in a city space. There are all manner of signs, some large ones, intricately written with many paragraphs describing their anti-capitalist message. The message is spreading. Londoners are stopping to read these long missives. They are also stopping in the street to talk to each other about how their lives are being run. They are in dire need of these alternative means of information. Nowhere in the mainstream media could I find it reported that on 29th October, police armed with machine guns raided the Kurdish Workers’ Party tent on the St Paul’s encampment, supposedly getting a tip-off from a member of the public. They said they were searching for guns, but left empty-handed. Deniz Cetiner, a student, was in the tent at the time and described how this kind of police tactic was what they put up with in Turkey all the time.

The Daily Mail prefers to report that people weren’t in bed by 11pm. Talk about clutching at straws, it seems the right are wholly unable to dredge up a true argument against our movement. The moral argument is too overwhelming. Traversing the city between the two sites, you see that glistening, new skyscrapers are being erected. The financiers are still right there at the feast. However, the construction site electricians are being threatened with a 35% wage cut. The City itself is a vast banner against the greed.

A few thoughts on Occupy Wall Street, I've been watching it and going down there for a while now but hadn't had a chance to speak on it.

By the way when I say some news media people are "ringers," I don't necessarily mean that they deliberately obfuscate, or get orders from some shadowy figure to do so. I think they'll often just have a personal investment in the system and status quo that's being critiqued/threatened, so they'll naturally--without any need to conspire--have their perception skewed by an instinct to protect the status quo they're invested in. So though it's quite possibly not their intention to play the ringer, it's the function they wind up serving nonetheless.

Free-Market Analysis: Occupy Wall Street burst onto the scene from nowhere. It was supposed to be a spontaneous demonstration of anger at the powers-that-be. But subsequent analysis by many clever alternative 'Net reporters has shown that at least some of the organizers may be co-opted and the same powerful CIA/AYM forces that created controlled overseas youth rebellions are likely involved with OWS as well.

The overseas youth rebellions seem to have been created primarily to generate an "Islamic Crescent" of various secretly controlled Muslim states including Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, etc. In each case, the Anglosphere power elite has destabilized the sectarian government and the result will likely be a takeover by Islamic parties, maybe the Muslim Brotherhood which has at least a toehold in numerous states. The Muslim Brotherhood is a controlled operation as we understand it.

OWS has what might be called "legs." ... It's a successful promotion. Julian Assange and WikiLeaks may be an elite promotion too. Great artists and entrepreneurs can labor in obscurity for decades. When someone is famous "overnight" and when the controlled mainstream media pays a lot of attention to him or her, the fix is apt to be in.

That may be how one can tell a false flag operation, as a matter of fact. Here's a potential rule referring to these sorts of issues: The amount of mainstream attention is commensurate to the possibility that the operation is controlled – a false flag. OWS would seem to have characteristics of such an operation.

This does not mean the PEOPLE involved are controlled – not in any sense. But those at the top, the ones we call the non leader/leaders, may well be involved in what can increasingly be seen as an elite-initiated Hegelian dialectic.

Yes, it appears that OWS is being set up as a "leftist" organization to combat the "right wing" Tea Party. Never mind that both of these organizations share a great deal of libertarian sentiment and citizen participation. As first the Tea Party and now OWS unfold, power elite habits of control are unveiled.

OWS is a fragmented movement of many different types and ideologies. But the trick the elites use is to place "their" people at the top of the movement and then ensure that these people get plenty of coverage by the mainstream media. Once others see their primacy of place, elements of authority, spoken or not, gradually fall into place. Those who wield the power of the media are always going to be important to such movements and gain clout.

In this case OWS is supposedly a resolutely leaderless movement, so that makes it even more confusing. It's not, of course. The same names predictably keep popping up over and over again. These people are supposed to end up on TV and in the news simply by virtue of their brilliance. We're not so sure.

From our humble point of view, it's likely a manipulation. The idea is to set up "leaders" of "movements" and then once these individuals have generated enough credibility they are used by the Anglosphere power elite to "steer" a given movement in a certain direction. Doesn't matter what the rank-and-file think. The movement will go where it is intended to go until its followers run out of enthusiasm as a result.

OWS has a good deal of libertarian involvement, for instance. One of its avowed goals is to "end the Fed 154127845" and yet somehow that's not the message that is being projected. Instead, the non-leader/leaders concentrate on leftist anodynes and the mainstream media covers these solutions approvingly.

Thus you get these weird anomalous events where a movement of people wearing Vendetta masks are somehow calling for higher taxes, more government regulation and increased US involvement overseas where necessary.

This isn't the truth of the movement, of course. This is a MANPULATION of the movement, and it's being done quite purposefully. We're sure that this OWS news site will receive PLENTY of publicity. It will be presented as a natural evolution of the "people's movement" but again we are not so sure.

This is how the power elite manipulate history. Set up a movement – an anomalous one – and invite anyone and everyone to participate. Provide non-leader/leaders at the top of YOUR choosing and then use your controlled media outlets to give them the publicity that no one else has access to. Finally, create a megaphone – a mouthpiece – controlled by your "controllers."

Conclusion: Now everything is tied up tightly, like a gaudy Christmas package. You've installed your men, provided the movement with plenty of fuzzy impetus and warm bodies, offered publicity to your non-leader/leaders and – finally – created a platform controlled by them. Sure, other platforms and other leaders might emerge, but our bets are on this new OWS news organization. The pattern is predictable – and we would have to think that the message will be, too.

Bristol Commune report on the goings-on at the city’s Occupy camp

The occupation of the open space area in front of the Bristol Council building began on the 15th October. The number of tents has grown since then, from 20 to over 40 at the beginning of November. People who have made the camp and ‘visitors’ come from all sorts of life. One day you may get a slightly middle class hippy feel to it, on another day you hear more of Bristolian accent or mix up with local homeless people. The camp has got relatively well-built basic infrastructure (for example a marquee with chairs to have meetings while it’s raining) and holds regular assemblies and ad hoc workshops. Every weekend there is a community fun day with arts, skills workshops and various discussions.

Bristol Commune went to two of them. In the discussion on financial crisis people were respectful and tried to listen to each other. One strand of participants argued that we need to get the banks under state control. People from ‘zeitgeist’ group argued for abolition of money and a resource-based economy. We said that it is impossible to reform capitalism by ‘cleaning’ it of the ‘bad’ financial capital. By doing that we would cut the essential blood veins of the system, which would bring it to even deeper crisis. We spoke against raising demands by the ‘occupy’ movement, instead of searching for links and coordination with sections of the working class. Most people were surprised and interested to hear about the encounter between the sparks and Occupy London, which we mentioned as an example.

The discussion a week later on ‘what is capitalism’ was another story. We managed to openly discuss our differences in how we understand capitalism. While some people equated it to a rule of corporations, others used the classical Marxist-Leninist scheme – the rule of owners of the means of production. We attempted to introduce a discussion on capital accumulation, global commodity chains, the proletarianisation of the populations of Asia and responses that must go beyond national boundaries and the trade union form of struggle. Unfortunately an interesting debate was suddenly side-tracked by a state socialist “anti-imperialist” who began defending Gaddafi and his regime as an alternative to capitalism. Despite the wish of the majority, she continually returned to defend the regime. At this point, it became futile for Bristol Commune to continue to engage in the debate. Another reason for leaving was the discussion was continually being photographed and filmed by people some of whom were obviously police officers. At one point the discussion was interrupted by a crowd of people dressed up as zombies for Halloween. This brought the obvious references to people sleep walking into social disaster and zombie capitalism – Chris Harman would have been proud!

A working class friend who came along with us (and who is no activist) said that she really liked this form of protest. She appreciated that she had a chance to speak, to exchange, to learn new things. ‘That’s got much more meaning for me than going to demonstrations or marches, where they just try to make you pissed off by repeating the same slogans on and on…’, she said.
